Wo wohnst du?

Ich wohne in Darmstadt mit meiner Frau Annett, die Deutsche ist. Im Mai 2005 sind wir von den USA nach Altenburg gezogen, wo meine Frau herstammt. Ich wäre glücklich gewesen, dort zu bleiben, aber leider gab es keine Arbeitsmöglichkeiten und so mußten wir dahin gehen, wo sich etwas anbot.

 

Hast Du deutsche Vorfahren? Dein Nachname lässt es vermuten...

Ja, meine Vorfahren sind aus Deutschland (und Schottland) und mein Nachname “Swartz” wurde eigentlich “Schwarz” geschrieben.

 

 

Was bist Du von Beruf?

Zur Zeit unterrichte ich Business English in Frankfurt (nicht so schwer für mich, weil es meine Muttersprache ist). Ich bin auch tätig als Freelance Graphic Designer, Illustrator und Videoproduzent (wo ich kreativ sein kann und welches mir Freude bereitet).

 

 

Wie kamst Du zur Fotografie?

Als ich anfing, an der Columbus College of Art and Design 1991 zu studieren, plante ich, ein Illustrator zu werden. Dann belegte ich einen Photographiekurs und verliebte mich sofort in das Medium. Ich wurde in der originalen photographischen Methode ausgebildet – d.h., Chemikalien und mechanischen Vorrichtungen so zu kombinieren, um Momente in der Zeit gefangen zu nehmen - ich fand dies als Herausforderung. Darum lehne ich es ab, digital jetzt zu arbeiten, da es für mich zu einfach ist.

 

 

Was fotografierst Du vor allem?

Abstrakte weibliche Akte. Als Mann erlaubt und gibt es mir die Gelegenheit, die andere Seite des Menschlichen zu erfahren. Ich habe viel über die Frauen gelernt durch das mit Frauen arbeiten. In den letzten Jahren habe ich auch die Freude an der Kreation von Serien entdeckt,  in der sich unterschiedliche Themen widerspiegeln.

 

 

Was möchtest Du fotografisch erreichen?

Ich möchte meine Kunstgaleriekarriere fortsetzen und ein Buch schließlich veröffentlichen. Ich halte mich nicht für einen Photographen. Ich bin ein Künstler, der mit Hilfe der Photographie arbeitet. Es ist nicht mein Hobby, es ist meine Leidenschaft.

 

 

Was machst Du in Deiner Freizeit?

In meinem Freizeit genieße ich es zu schreiben, zu zeichnen, Dinge zu konstruieren und errichten und kreativ zu sein in jeder Hinsicht.

Where do you live?

I live in Darmstadt with my wife Annett who is German. In May 2005, we moved from the U.S. to Altenburg which is where she is from. I would have been happy to stay there but we found jobs elsewhere and had to leave.

 

 

 

Do you have German forefathers? Your name sounds like...

Yes, my forefathers were from Germany (and Scotland) and my last name Swartz was originally Schwarz.

 

 

 

What do you do for a living?

Currently I teach business English in Frankfurt (not so hard because it's my mother tongue). I am also a freelance graphic designer, illustrator and video producer (creative and enjoyable).

 

 

 

How did you come to photography?

When I began studying at the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1991, I was planning to be an illustrator. I attended one photography course and instantly fell in love with the medium. I was trained in the origional photographic method - chemicals and mechanical devices combining to capture moments in time - I found it challenging. That is why I refuse to work digitally now, it's too easy.

 

 

 

What do you primarily photograph?

Abstract female nudes. As a man it allows me the opportunity to experience the other side of the human condition. I have learned a lot about women working with women. In the last few years I have also discovered the joy of creating series of work based around different themes.

 

 

 

What are your photographic goals?

I would like to continue my fine art gallery career and eventually publish a book. I don't consider myself a photographer. I am an artist who works through the medium of photography. It's not my hobby, it's my passion.

 

 

 

What do you do in your freetime?

In my freetime I enjoy writing, drawing, building things and being creative in any way I can.
